As anyone tapped into the digital grapevine knows, HBO’s new drama series The Idol has been a hot topic in the press of late. With The Weeknd starring as the crazed self-help guru and cult leader Tedros and Lily-Rose Depp as the stardom-seeking lead, the show made its debut on the 4th of June.

Last week, The Weeknd released two tracks from the first episode of the series: the theme song, ‘The Lure’, as well as ‘World Class Sinner / I’m a Freak’. The theme song was written by The Weeknd and heavyweight producer Mike Dean and the second song was sung by Lily-Rose Depp and co-written by Abel and Asa Taccone.

Yesterday, The Weeknd released 3 new tracks from episode 2, which will feature alongside already released records like ‘Popular (with Playboi Carti & Madonna)’ and ‘Double Fantasy (with Future)’ on the official soundtrack album, The Idol, Vol. 1, which is slated for release on the 30th of June.

Disney has put a contemporary spin on their classic animation The Little Little Mermaid. Originally written by Hans Christian Andersen, the fairy tale has resurfaced, and this time with a twist. Now reimagined, The Little Mermaid is a musical adaptation featuring singer-songwriter Halle Bailey as Ariel, the little mermaid herself.

The major motion picture made its debut on the 26th of May and, naturally, the official soundtrack, written by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, followed soon after – available now across digital streaming platforms. Fans can also purchase the cinematic score on vinyl at Disney Music Emporium.

Rob Marshall, the film’s director and producer, said the following: “Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda have written three thrilling new songs and one new reprise for this film, which is kind of amazing. It’s extraordinary actually.”

Ed is Dead taps AI to create ‘Wolfram Alpha’ song

Ed is Dead is at the forefront of technological development. The Spanish producer has recruited the aid of the Artificial Intelligence program Wolfram Alpha to compose his latest offering, an atmospheric single titled by the very name of the AI program.

Stream / Download: Ed is Dead – ‘Wolfram Alpha’

Signed to Idioteque Records, ‘Wolfram Alpha’ sounds futuristic. With blips and bleeps that float like motes of dust and the periphery of our hearing, it seems to be calculating, developing new sonic connections as the song progresses. This generates an unnamable emotion – a feeling somewhere between ominous terror and unbounded hope.

Delving into detail, Ed Is Dead tells us how he created the song: “Wolfram Alpha is a kind of online search engine that uses a computational and natural language approach to generate answers to questions, a bit like a ‘proto chatGPT’. Actually, when I started to write the song, the main voices (that are, in part, generated with AI virtual singers) said, ‘I don´t fight it, but I don´t see the sunlight’ like someone who lives.”

Tour Dates:

07 July – (Cultural Event), Albania

16 Sept – Cuerpo Romo Festival, Teatros del Canal – Madrid, Spain

29 Sept – Entropia Festival, Zaragoza, Spain

After Ryuichi Sakamoto’s passing on the 28th of March, his management shared a rather eerie playlist that the 71-year-old curated before losing his ongoing battle with cancer. Titled Funeral, the playlist contains 33 tracks by the likes of collaborator alva noto, French pianist Erik Satie (who makes a number of appearances throughout), and the German Baroque composer Johann Sebastian Bach to name a few. Curated by a man in the midst of self-grieving, it is a sombre farewell.

“We would like to share the playlist that Ryuichi had been privately compiling to be played at his own funeral to accompany his passing,” said his management. They first shared the playlist on Twitter, tugging at the heartstrings of musicians and fans alike when they tweeted, “He truly was with music until the very end.”

SoundCloud’s new ‘Fans’ tool allows musicians to connect with devoted fans

As musicians know, the audience is everything. As such, SoundCloud is in the process of launching an innovative new feature on SoundCloud for Artists that will enable creators to make direct contact with key members of their audience. Called ‘Fans’, the feature was built to help artists forge stronger bonds with their die-hard fans.

Still in the beta phase, the feature has been made available to over 50,000 test users, who are now able to message the select few who make a difference. The hope here is that artists will be able to build increasingly meaningful relationships with their core followers.

The potential here is worth noting: instead of relying on streams, musicians could, at least in theory, offer their loyal listeners exclusive content and merchandise, leading to higher revenue; the possibilities are endless. In addition, musicians will be able to track listening behaviours and form strategies based on the feature’s handy analytics dashboard.

France based global phenoms ascendant vierge released their genre-bending album entitled One Nouvelle Chance on April 28. The album merges electronic with a hypnotic, idiosyncratic aesthetic.

The duo, which is composed of producer Paul Seul and vocalist Mathilde Fernandez, began creating the album during the 2020 lockdown. They strived and succeeded to generate an all new style which is a musical melting pot of happy hardcore, EDM, trance, and hyperpop.

With poetic lyrics by Mathilde Fernandez and mixing by Geoff Swan (Rina Sawayama, Caroline Polachek, Charli XCX),the wide-ranging project crystallizes why they’ve already provided a cult-favorite performance for Yves Saint-Laurent; worked with the likes of Danny L Harle; and sold out shows in London, Berlin, Madrid, Prague, and more.

Today we are sharing an interview with Société Holographique de Montréal-label founder and Dance music producer Hologramme. The producer recently performed at the Timeless Festival in South Africa and will be showcasing his live set at Piknic Electronik in Montreal, Canada, this June. Speaking of things done lately, the label owner released an emotive single titled ‘Candide’ along with a live acoustic video performance of the track. Mentioning an album in the works, he told us more:

Stream / Download: Hologramme – ‘Candide’

If any, what strange sound design/effect trick did you use in ‘Candide’?

There are sooo many layers in this song! Everything you hear is analog. Every synth is played and not quantized. Most of the percussion was recorded. The delays are from my Roland space echo re-301 and reverbs from my AMS reverb.

How did this new song come about?

This song is part of my upcoming album, it was produced in front of the Saint-Lawrence River in Trois-Pistoles. It comes from a lot of fun playing with analog instruments and from a lot of emotions as well.

Where do you find inspiration for your sound?

I’d like to tell you that I listen to a ton of music, but the truth is that I try to forget about everything I know when I create. I just try to find the most authentic feeling I have and me and create around that.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?

Do your thing; don’t listen to anybody and stay authentic. There is so much music out there, you don’t want to sound like someone else. Stay unique and relevant. Even if people don’t understand, stay true to yourself.

What is the craziest or best thing that has happened to you as an act/artist so far?

I once saw the bridge of Montreal illuminate on my music. That was kind of special. Seeing your music on films from Hollywood can also be heartwarming. After that, the most special thing is seeing people connect with your sound and feeling all the emotions you’ve put into it. Playing live is the ultimate connection with your audience.

Describe your ideal live-set.

That’s a hard one. I’m hesitating between an abandoned factory in Berlin with a crazy staging and light setup at midnight before Fourtet or Jamie xx or on a beach somewhere in Zanzibar at sunset playing an experimental set with tons of synths.

If you were to organise a festival, who would be on your dream line up (alive or dead)

Wow ok. The Woodstock set/band of Miles Davis playing Bitches Brew. Caribou. Gorillaz. 4 am Charlie Parker Solo set. Mount Kimbie. Floating Points, Pharoah Sanders and the London Symphonic Orchestra. Kiasmos. Photay. Rival Consoles. Fauve. Thelonius Monk trio. Sébastien Tellier. Feu! Chatterton, and Childish Gambino just to name a few.

What mood are you trying to evoke with your music?

A danceable sadness.

What inspires you outside of music?

Architecture, design, food, and love.

If it was your last day on Earth, and you knew it. What would you do?

Record every idea that is in my head on piano/synths and then cook for all my friends & family.

Say something inspirational to your fans in closing.

There is only one purpose in life and it’s to learn. Once you stop learning you stop living. Stay far from egos, from ready-to-think ideas, make your own, and stay kind. It will pay off.
