Out this past Friday via Lisbon Lux Records, Origins from Das Mörtal pulls back the curtain on the producer’s evolving sound, dropping right into the thick of the electronic season. Originally from Berlin and now entrenched in Montréal‘s scene, he channels early inspiration from Steve Moore and Aphex Twin into a blend of techno, occult electro, and Italo disco that hits hard. With 28 million-plus streams on Spotify and worldwide media pickups, he’s no stranger to the circuit—think festival slots at Osheaga, Transmusicales de Rennes, FME, and Meg Festival, plus opening runs for Vitalic, Perturbator, and Carpenter Brut. The EP clocks in as a tight run through Das Mörtal‘s wheelhouse, starting with ‘Minimal Chainsaw’‘s relentless buzzsaw leads that deliver on the occult electro feel before shifting gears into ‘…Now’‘s sleek, acid-tinged breaks that push the tempo and club feel. Zeroing in on the the highlight of the EP is ‘I Just Want To Hold You (Part I)’, he reshapes moody Italo into a groove-heavy dance number, complete with vocoder hooks and layered pads that oozes Mörtal’s Charisma—it’s got that inescapable aura farming vibe.
